Harrisonburg, Virginia
America - One Nation Under God
July 2005
Message from the Grand Knight:
We've just started into a new fraternal year, and the first thing that
strikes me is just how dependent we are upon one another. Our parish is
in a transition, and so are we. As the direction of the parish becomes
more focused, and more importantly, as we become a more close-knit
Catholic community, the Knights of Columbus will be called upon to lend
support and leadership. To get us started on the right foot, Father Tom
Mattingly, has graciously agreed to meet with us Knights on August 23.
Please make every effort to be there; to show our support to Father Tom,
and to get to know each other a little better. (See schedule, below.)
We'll also be having the Installation of Officers, this coming Sunday.
An historic first will be the installation of the Ladies Auxiliary,
immediately following the Knights ceremony. The Ladies are a welcome
addition and we'll be working with them closely this year. Your
attendance at the ceremony would provide a warm welcome to Father Tom
and the Ladies Auxiliary. Hope to see you there.
Vivat Jesus,
Keith Holzer

Schedule:
Sunday July 24: 3:00 PM - Installation of Officers and of Ladies
Auxiliary in the church, followed by a reception in Johnston Hall.
Tuesday July 26 - No Regular Meeting this date. The Installation will
serve as our second meeting for July.
Tuesday August 9 - Regular Business Meeting: Rosary at 7:00 PM and
Meeting at 7:30.
Sunday August 21 - Tentative - Picnic for Knights and their families at
a local Harrisonburg park. Details to follow.
Tuesday August 23 - Special Business Meeting, with Father Tom Mattingly.
Rosary at 7:00 PM, Very brief business meeting at 7:30, followed by a
get-together with Father Tom. The general plan is that Father will tell
us a bit about himself and also get to meet us Knights and answer
questions we might have for him. Refreshments will be served. Hope to
see you there.
September - First and Second Degree (together) - The date's not set yet,
we need to coordinate with the JMU council but probably the second
business meeting. Get your candidates lined up. We'll be praying a
Rosary between the degrees, and we'll have refreshments afterwards. It's
a beautiful ceremony. If you haven't been to one in a while, come and
join us. The ceremonies help re-affirm just why we're Knights; and to
have a nice crowd makes it that much more meaningful for the candidates.
Hope to see you there.
Also, The regular Knightline format will be returning soon. If anyone is
interested in helping out with it, please call me. Thanks.
SHENANDOAH VALLEY ASSEMBLY
#2237
July 15, 2005
Sir Knights:
I want to personally thank the assembly for electing me to be your Faithful Navigator for the Fraternal Year 2005-2006. As we enter into our 15th year as an assembly, I pledge my efforts and energy to continue the outstanding legacy established by my predecessors. Please keep your officers and I in your prayers.
This year, I would like to see more Sir Knights participate in Color Corps and Honor Guard ceremonies. I ask that each Sir Knight speak with their respective pastors and offer the Assembly's Honor Guard at confirmations, Advent and Lenten services, and any other appropriate events the church might hold. For those Sir Knights that have not purchased their regalia, you can still participate with your black tie, tuxedo and social baldric.
The next big event is the installation of officers on Sunday, August 14, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Harrisonburg, Virginia. Our Master of the Calvert Province, PSD J. P. McCusker, will do the officiating. Officers and Sir Knights in attendance are requested to wear tuxedo, black tie, and social baldric. Upon completion of the installation, I request the presence of the Assembly Sir Knights and their ladies to meet at Simple Pleasures Restaurant, 380 University Blvd, Harrisonburg to celebrate the Assembly's 14th Anniversary. The meal will be a buffet to include salad, three entries, vegetable, desert, rolls and tea and coffee. Cost will be $28.00 per person. Sir Knights, this is our anniversary and we would like to see as many of you as possible in attendance. Please let me know either by telephone (540) 574-3364 or e-mail wcorley5@adelphia.net by Wednesday, August 10, 2005. You can pay either by check (made payable to the Assembly) or cash at the installation.
Here are some other events for your calendar:
October 12: Columbus Day Ceremony at the Statue in front of Union Station, Washington D.C. Fourth Degree Knights from Virginia, Maryland and the District will meet to honor and celebrate our patron of the Knights of Columbus. More information will be provided.
October 16: Blue Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Harrisonburg. This Mass is to honor the first responders of our communities in the Valley. The Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. and this year, we will have some military personnel from the Valley that have recently returned from Afghanistan. The State Deputy and Officers of the Virginia State Council will be in attendance. We will need members to participate in the Honor Guard and ushers seating of our guests.
November 11 & 12: The Exemplification will be held in Richmond, Virginia. This is a perfect time for those 3d Degree Knights to join our ranks. More information will be forthcoming.
December: The Annual Harrisonburg Christmas Parade. The exact date is not known, but I would like to see not only our Color Corps march in regalia, but as many other Sir Knights in black tie, tuxedo and social baldric.
Our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. as follows: July: Staunton; Aug: Harrisonburg; Sep: Staunton; Oct: Harrisonburg; Nov & Dec: (To be announced). A special note for the August and September meetings. In August, our Commander will be going over instructions for annual certification. In September, our assigned Associate Marshall will hold certifications. Sir Knights are requested to bring their swords, service baldrics and gloves at both meetings.
In closing, I want to personally thank Sir Knight Tim Kenney for his outstanding performance and dedication as Faithful Navigator for the last two years. This was Tim's second time to meet the call and stand up to the plate. Bravo Zulu for a job well done.
Semper Fidelis,
W. BROOKS CORLEY, JR.
